Why did you join Cane2Cane?
I was already involved in a mentorship program through the Business School and found the experience incredibly rewarding. Joining Cane2Cane felt like a natural extension of that commitment.
Impact on your personal, professional, and life goals
I was genuinely amazed by how serious and motivated the students were. Watching their growth and progress over time was both inspiring and fulfilling.
Memorable connections through Cane2Cane
I am still in touch with two of the students I mentored. One is Gipsy Velar, who now owns her own accounting practice in Homestead, Florida. I last saw her two years ago along with her daughter. Gipsy also authored a Spanish-language fiction book, Diario La Mujer Monarca, which is available on Amazon. She worked her way through Miami after immigrating from Cuba as a teenager with her husband.
I am also still in touch with Marcia Guevara Valor, who earned her MBA in Sustainability and worked for three years in Royal Caribbean’s Sustainability Department. Unfortunately, her green card was not renewed, and she was forced to return to Venezuela. Since then, Marcia has written a powerful piece on climate change titled “¿Y a mí qué?”
Advice or key takeaway from these connections
All five students I mentored were impressive, but these students especially stood out. Their drive, resilience, and accomplishments continue to inspire me.
Encouragement for fellow alumni to join
Cane2Cane was a deeply rewarding experience, especially during Homecoming. Even after the program, I received several emails from students I met, which reinforced just how meaningful these connections can be.
Michael’s story is a testament to the power of mentorship and the impact of giving back to the community! Thank you, Michael, for your dedication to helping Canes thrive!
