Duties may include and are not limited to (tasks will vary based on substantive unit):
- Assist the attorneys in researching laws and court decisions for determining most appropriate legal action
- Prepare cases for attorneys to present in court, sometimes including the drafting of pleadings
- Conduct legal research
- Compose memorandums, draft legal documents, and other correspondence as assigned
- Represent clients in administrative hearings, with supervision
- Conduct interviews of applicants for legal assistance
- Perform other duties as assigned
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
The Legal Associate is directly supervised by the Unit Manager.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
The Legal Associate do not excise supervisory authority.
NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
- It is necessary, in order to perform this position, to have some knowledge of procedures and techniques used in legal research, including the various related sources of legal information
- Must have an adequate working knowledge of legal terminology and legal formats, and adequate skill in typing, word processing, and computer legal research
- Must have an ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients, attorneys, staff, and the general public
- Must have the ability to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions
- Must have the ability to compose and prepare routine and technical legal correspondence
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Graduate an accredited law school and waiting on bar results.
