Description

The Prince George’s County Department of Parks and Recreation is getting ready for an exciting Summer 2025 season, and we want you to be a part of the action! We are seeking applicants who love working with children, youth, and young adults with intellectual, emotional, developmental, and physical disabilities. If you would like to be a part of our dynamic team, the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, Department of Parks and Recreation, Prince George’s County has an exciting summer employment opportunity for you.

Selected candidates must maintain confidentiality regarding disability, medical and personal information. Must be willing to actively participate in all summer camp activities, assist with the adaptation of activities and help facilitate social interaction. Must be enthusiastic, energetic, and passionate about working with children and teens with disabilities, as well as have an interest in community recreation, art, nature, and/or sports. Previous experience working with children/teens, summer camps and individuals with disabilities preferred. Ability to stand waist deep in the water required for some positions. Some positions may supervise others.

We have a variety of positions available in Therapeutic Recreation. All selected candidates must display excellent customer service skills and attain First Aid, CPR and AED certifications (provided) and attend 24 hours of orientation and training classes. Ages 16 – 17 must have a work permit if hired.

A complete background investigation will be completed before hiring. Applicants may be subject to medical, drug (including marijuana), and alcohol testing.

Full and part-time (non-benefited) positions available and range from 6 to 8-week assignments. Starting positions and pay rates will be based on relevant education and experience. Please note: All positions are dependent on programs meeting minimum enrollment. If programs are cancelled staff will not be scheduled to work.

Examples of Important Duties

Therapeutic Recreation:

Therapeutic Recreation (TR) programs are designed specifically for the needs of individuals with disabilities to promote recreation skills, socialization, independence, and overall quality of life. Programs are highly structured and accompanied by a high staff/participant ratio.

The following opportunities are available:

Therapeutic Recreation Assistant Counselor $16 – $16.50

Actively participates in all program activities, assists with the adaptation of activities, and helps to facilitate social interactions. Assistant counselors communicate effectively, enforce program rules, comply with policies/procedures and Youth Camp Standards. Minimum age 16, entry level position, must have desire and interest in working with individuals with disabilities, minimal related experience required.

Therapeutic Recreation Counselor $17 – $19

Responsibilities include actively assisting with planning and leading activities, facilitating participation, and helping with daily living skills. Duties include assisting with the implementation of behavior plans as needed. Counselors communicate effectively, enforce program rules, comply with policies/procedures and Youth Camp Standards. Minimum age 18, plus HS Diploma plus one year of experience working with persons with disabilities or years of related disability experience.

Therapeutic Recreation Senior Counselor $20 – $21

Responsibilities include planning and leading activities, facilitating participation, and assisting with daily living skills. Duties also include maintaining documentation and implementation of behavior plans as needed. Senior counselors communicate effectively, enforce program rules, comply with policies/procedures and Youth Camp Standards. Minimum age 18. Requires one year of college plus one year of experience working with persons with disabilities or two or more years of related disability experience.

Therapeutic Recreation Leader/Driver $20 – $21

Leader/Drivers transport participants with disabilities to and from program activities on M-NCPPC vehicles. Additional duties include securing passengers safely, ensuring the vehicle is clean, well maintained, adhering to, and following emergency procedures, and being safe/courteous driver. Must have a valid Class C or D Driver’s License with no more than one (1) point on driver’s license. Must have a minimum of two years or more of experience driving, minimum age 21, attain Defense Driving certification.

Therapeutic Recreation Assistant Camp Director $22 – $23.10

Assistant Camp Directors are responsible for acting as the Camp Director in the Director’s absence. Assists with the overall supervision of the onsite operation of therapeutic recreation programs for children and teens with disabilities. Maintains open communication with the Director and assists with planning, organizing, facilitating, and evaluating specialized activities designed to meet the needs of the participants. At least 12 months of previous experience in a camping or children’s program as an administrator or a supervisor. Minimum Age: 21

Therapeutic Recreation Summer Camp Director $25 – $26.25

Directors are responsible for overall supervision of the onsite operation of a therapeutic recreation summer camp for children and teens with disabilities. Director plans, facilitates, participates in camp activities to meet the needs of the participants. Trains, supervises, and evaluates staff and volunteers. Attend meetings, enforce program rules and Youth Camp Standards, work closely with parents, and MNCPPC career staff.

Qualifications: At least 24 months of previous experience in a camping or children’s program as an administrator or a supervisor. Minimum Age: 21

Sign Language Support $19.25 – $46*

Provide effective sign language interpretation for deaf or hard of hearing participants. Provide necessary assistance and adaptations, actively participates in all programs and helps to facilitate social interaction. Minimum requirement, HS diploma plus 1 year of signing. *Salary depends on experience and certification.

Minimum Qualifications

All selected applicants must attend mandatory trainings; CPR, First Aid, and AED,

Therapeutic Recreation Orientation, Disability Characteristics, Behavior Management Techniques, Documentation and Communication and other designated trainings.

These positions are seasonal and do not include a benefits package; however, seasonal employees may be eligible to accrue sick leave. A complete background investigation will be completed prior to hire.

Work may be indoors or outdoors and requires extended hours of physical activity.
