Position Title: Seasonal Interpretive Naturalist
Location: Hidden Pond Nature Center, 8511 Greeley Blvd, Springfield, VA 22152
Hours: Part-time work schedule
- Primary need is for weekday shifts, Monday–Friday, between 8:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Additional availability on evenings and weekends is needed to support programs and Nature Center operating hours.
- 10–20 hours per week during the spring and fall, with reduced hours in the winter depending on program demand. 20–40 hours per week during the summer.
Salary: $17 – $19 per hour
Overview: Share your passion for nature with the public by leading interpretive nature and outdoor field study programs for students, scouts, families, and community members. Build your knowledge of local plants and wildlife while developing your public speaking and environmental education skills. This position offers a variety of experiences, including leading educational programs, interacting with visitors at the Nature Center, assisting with daily operations, and caring for exhibit animals.
Duties:
- Develop and lead educational programs for school groups, scouts, the public, camps, and other audiences.
- Perform Naturalist-in-Charge hosting duties at the park Nature Center, including interacting with visitors, answering phone calls, working the sales desk, opening and closing the building, taking program reservation information, and answering questions from the general public about site programs, events, wildlife, and other concerns. Direct volunteer staff in Nature Center hosting, animal care, and educational program duties.
- Work directly with the public, particularly at the Nature Center
- Assist with the regular care and feeding of exhibit animals.
- All other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Preferred education or currently studying Environmental Science, Parks and Recreation, or similar field.
- Experience developing and leading educational or interpretive programs is preferred.
- Must be at least eighteen years old.
- Must be out of high school for at least two years for Naturalist-in-charge duties.
- Applicants should have a basic knowledge of nature, some experience working with the public, communications skills, and the ability to follow oral and written directions in a team setting under direction of senior staff.
- Must be able to work independently and with others.
