Position Summary Reporting to the Executive Director, the Program Educator facilitates NLC programs and handles related administrative tasks. The Program Educator works closely with co-instructors, program site staff, and community partners to facilitate engaging, relevant hands-on science and garden experiences for youth. The ideal candidate is highly self-motivated, resourceful, and enthusiastic about science, tinkering, gardening, and environmental sustainability, and eager to continue learning and creating meaningful learning experiences for youth. This is a part-time, temporary position starting at an average of 9-13 hours per week during the school year, increasing depending on the season and programs in session. Position Responsibilities :
Instruction & Planning
• Collaborate with co-instructors on lesson planning, scheduling, and securing, organizing, and hauling materials to facilitate in- and out-of-school learning experiences for NLC programs • Create a positive and empowering learning atmosphere for participants, fostering their self-esteem, creativity, curiosity, and resilience • Develop and coordinate healthy working partnerships with NLC staff and program stakeholders • Assist in creating and updating outreach materials and in maintaining educational equipment, supplies, and inventory • Host booths at community events
Administration
• Track program data for grants and contracts, including outcome measures and attendance records • Track hours, mandatory breaks, and expense record keeping • Maintain accurate records of required clearances and certifications (e.g., Live Scan, TB clearance) and flag upcoming renewals • Seek out and assist with program funding opportunities, including researching and drafting grant applications • Keep materials, digital files, and program schedules organized and up to date using Google Workspace/shared drives
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities • 3+ years of experience in an educational, camp, or youth-development role • Associate’s degree or higher, or demonstrated successful training within an educational setting and a proven track record working with children • Experience working with school districts, nonprofits, or community-based organizations • Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills working with young people of all ages, skill levels, and attitudes • Willingness to work with all youth in a compassionate and supportive manner • Excellent organizational and collaborative abilities, time management, and follow-up skills • Ability to work as part of a team • Own transportation and a valid California driver’s license, with an approved level of auto insurance • Successful DOJ/FBI Live Scan background clearance • Completion of California-mandated Mandated Reporter Training, or willingness to complete prior to working with youth • Negative TB risk assessment/clearance, per California school-site requirements
Desirable Skills and Qualifications • Current CPR/First Aid certification • Valid California Teaching Credential (Multiple Subject, Single Subject – Science, or Education Specialist) issued by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing • Environmental or science education certification, such as Project Learning Tree, Project WILD, or NAAEE Certified Environmental Educator • Familiarity with Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and outdoor/garden-based instruction • Working knowledge of Google Workspace and ability to work virtually from home • Passion for equity of people and planet • Ability to speak, read, and write in Spanish • Grant writing and monitoring experience a plus Compensation & Logistics • Position is paid as an employee, starting at $24.00/hour based on experience • Work status: Part-time, Temporary • Reports to: Executive Director
