Paralegal Position at SLH
Stimson LaBranche Hubbard is a women-owned law firm with a vibrant practice dedicated to defending civil rights, advancing justice and providing exceptional legal services to those in the most vulnerable of situations. Our seven lawyers primarily focus on criminal defense and represent persons accused of all kinds of crimes, including murder, sexual assault, and fraud. We also assist people pursuing violations of their civil rights by law enforcement and in jails/prisons, represent students/attorneys facing disciplinary action, and defend clients in civil litigation.
We are seeking to hire a Paralegal to join our team. An overview of the job description appears below, but the ideal candidate is someone who can roll up their sleeves and help with whatever needs to be done. Job Description
The role of a Paralegal at SLH is multifaceted. Below please find general descriptions of the anticipated work you would be performing, broken down by category.
- Case Management: Organize and manage case files, track and calendar deadlines, and ensure all case documentation is up-to-date and readily accessible. Filing pleadings in state and federal courts. Being knowledgeable about applicable rules in the various courts and ensuring pleadings are filed in conformity with the rules and practice standards.
- Administrative Assistance: Manage administrative responsibilities for cases and the firm, such as case scheduling, managing calendars, tracking case costs and invoices, reviewing and responding to attorney email correspondence, and working with third-party vendors that administratively support the firm.
- Client Interaction: Interact empathetically and professionally with clients, many of whom have experienced trauma, including gathering information and keeping them apprised of case developments.
- Document Preparation: Draft and prepare documents for use in case development, investigation, and litigation in federal and state court, including disclosures, discovery requests, open records requests, subpoenas, and simple motions.
- Discovery review and organization: Download discovery provided by the government or opposing party and ensure all files OCR’ed or otherwise accessible to counsel. Review and organize discovery, which can be voluminous, and create timelines, charts, and other summary/organizational tools to assist attorney review. Review audio and video footage and obtain appropriate transcripts.
- Trial Preparation: Assist attorneys in preparing for trials, including organizing trial exhibits, coordinating witnesses, and providing courtroom support.
Preferred Qualifications
- Highly organized, detail-oriented, proactive, and able to manage multiple tasks and shifting priorities
- Ability to work collaboratively within a team as well as independently
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Acrobat
- Strong research and investigative skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university is preferred
- Some experience as a paralegal, preferably in a criminal or civil rights practice (willingness and eagerness to learn may be substituted for experience)
- Paralegal certification is not required
Salary and Benefits
- Anticipated salary of $65,000-75,000 depending on experience, with possibility for year end-bonuses based on personal and firm performance
- Monthly stipend for health insurance
- 3 weeks paid time off (vacation and sick leave) each year
- Option to contribute to firm-sponsored retirement account after one year at firm
- Requires in-person work at our offices in Uptown/City Park West with the possibility for remote work after initial onboarding period
