Veteran Affairs Student Trainee Experience Program (VA-STEP)
400 hour clinical paid clinical internship for BSN students between their junior and senior years (May – September). VA-STEP is designed to increase participants’ clinical skills, clinical judgment, and critical thinking while caring for our nation’s Veterans. This program provides opportunities for learning including didactic or classroom experiences and clinical practice with a qualified RN (Registered Nurse) preceptor. Students are appointed during the summer months for 400 hours. This experience may continue during their senior academic year on a part-time basis to no more than 800 hours.
Requirements
- Current nursing student who has completed or is within one semester of completing their junior year of a bachelor’s degree program.
- Citizen of the United States by birth or naturalization. U.S. Veterans are considered first among all equally qualified candidates.
- Attending a CCNE or ACEN accredited nursing program resulting in eligibility to sit for a Professional RN license in a state, commonwealth or territory of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
- In good academic standing (as defined by the school you are attending).
- Minimum GPA 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
- Be willing to undergo a background/suitability investigation.
- Be willing to come to work for the VA after graduation and not be obligated to work somewhere outside the VA after graduation.
- Be available to work 400 hours prior to graduation from your education program.
