Job Description – Investment Analyst
Birnam Oak Advisors, LP (“Birnam Oak”), a soon-to-launch investment adviser founded by Christopher L. DeLong (current Principal and Chief Investment Officer of large two-decade old global alternative investment manager with peak assets exceeding $10+ billion) seeks to add an Investment Analyst to its founding team. Work alongside Mr. DeLong, the investment team, and the rest of the Birnam Oak launch team to build the backbone of our new investment business.
This is an interdisciplinary role for a team player who wants to learn rapidly and contribute to building a new investment business with a seasoned team that has a strong track record of success. This is a great role for a person wishing to get a hands-on start in the investment space, and for whom no job is too big or too small.
The successful candidate will be a self-starter with strong organizational and problem-solving skills, deep curiosity, and the ability to read and process large quantities of information quickly. This role will report directly to Mr. DeLong and is based in our office in New York, New York.
Responsibilities
- Keep track of economic, geopolitical, and financial developments throughout the world.
- Monitor and filter news flow / research related to existing portfolio positions.
- Research publicly traded securities and high information situations, such as mergers, capital structure changes, and various regulatory events.
- Create financial and options models.
- Read and analyze legal documents.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree (BA, BS, BBA) or equivalent. Strong academic record required.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills; acute attention to detail and process orientation; commitment to excellence; strong organizational and problem-solving abilities.
- Strong interest in financial markets and the mechanics / personalities that drive them.
- Experience with coding (i.e., building ChatGPT widgets), database tools and data visualization software a plus, but not required.
- Knowledge of financial and political history a plus.
- Desire to manage several projects and priorities at once and work independently with general direction.
- 0-3 years of experience with an investment adviser or manager of alternative investment strategies, helpful, but not required.

Founded in 2023 by Christopher L. DeLong, Birnam Oak seeks to achieve a combination of equity risk premium and excess returns for its clients by investing in concentrated positions in merger arbitrage, capital structure arbitrage, legal/regulatory risks, volatility expressions, and highly liquid capture of duration and credit spread. Prior to founding Birnam Oak, Mr. DeLong served as Principal and Chief Investment Officer of Taconic Capital Advisors L.P. Mr. DeLong was a founding member of the Taconic team in 1999. Prior to joining Taconic, Mr. DeLong worked in the Equity Derivatives Group of J.P. Morgan, as a corporate Associate at Cravath Swaine & Moore and was a judicial clerk to the Honorable Ralph K. Winter of the Second Circuit Court of Appeals. Mr. DeLong received an A.B. in European History, magna cum laude, from Harvard College, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, and a J.D. from Yale Law School.
Erin Ross is a day one employee and Partner at Birnam Oak, serving as Chief Operating Officer, General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer. Prior to founding Birnam Oak with Mr. DeLong, Ms. Ross was a Partner, Chief Operating Officer, General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer at Hitchwood Capital Management LP, where she was a founding member of the team in 2014. Prior to founding Hitchwood, Ms. Ross served as Managing Director, General Counsel and CCO at Scout Capital Management, L.L.C. and as General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer at Watershed Asset Management, L.L.C. Ms. Ross started her career at Davis Polk & Wardwell and is a graduate of the University of Michigan (Honors College, graduating with High Honors) and Columbia Law School, where she was named a James Kent Scholar.
