BICYCLE INSTRUCTOR JOB DESCRIPTION
TEACH THE JOYS OF BIKING!
We’re hiring people to share their love of bicycling by teaching BPS students and other Bostonians to ride safely, confidently, and joyfully.
OVERVIEW:
This is a short-term 1099 position for approximately two months, with possibility for longer-term extension. You will be paid as a 1099 vendor.
Under the supervision of the Boston Bikes Director or designee the Boston Transportation Department (BTD) is seeking candidates for its Youth Cycling Program community programs team. Team members support multiple education and outreach initiatives, with most of their time dedicated to on-bike youth and adult educational programming across the City.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide instruction during school time to BPS students (elementary through high school) on bicycle skills, the parts of a bicycle, flat-repair, and bicycle safety rules
- Lead group rides and on-bicycle skill-building activities, keeping the class organized and safe.
- Select age-appropriate bicycle routes and assess risk
- Provide bicycle instruction at free workshops and classes for adults
- Assist with summer bicycle programming at parks and community centers
- Transport bicycles and helmets to/from sites
- Assist in maintaining fleet of bicycles and supplies
- Provide minor logistical coordination with school liaison and Boston Bikes Youth Cycling Program Manager
- Organize and execute events, under direction of a Boston Bikes staff member
- Engage and educate the public about BTD projects, initiatives, and other transportation safety topics
- Respond to constituent requests, questions, and complaints.
- Perform related work as required.
REQUIREMENTS
- Experience with and enthusiasm for riding a bike!
- Ability to motivate and lead activities for youth of varied ages.
- Value working with diversity of people and team teaching methods.
- Reliable, punctual, and strong work ethic.
- Positive, professional attitude and capacity to adapt quickly in response to circumstances.
- Proficiency in other languages, such as Spanish, Mandarin, Vietnamese, Portuguese, Haitian-Creole, and Arabic, is beneficial but not required.
- Bicycle maintenance and mechanic skills are beneficial, but not required.
- Valid driver’s license with good driving record preferred, but not required.
- Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.
PAY AND TERMS
- $30 per hour, commensurate with experience.
- Benefits not included.
- 2-month 1099 contractor, with possibility to extend
- 20-35 hours/week
