Start Date/End Date: May 13, 2024- August 9, 2024
To be considered for this position, applicants will need to be fully available for the duration of the program. From May 13 – June 7, 2024 scheduling is dependent on camp preparation and training needs. When camp is in session work schedule is M-F 8:30-4:30, starting on June 10, 2024- through August 9, 2024. The week of July 1-5, 2024 is partial schedule due to holiday.
Position Summary:
This position is responsible for leading the Estuary EDventures “EE” summer day camps designed for ages 6-8,9-12, and 13-15. The Counselor will work with the Education Department to implement all summer camp activities in a safe and fun manner. This position will help create a connection between campers and the Tampa Bay Estuary in a welcoming environment.
Responsibilities:
- Ensure the safety of campers within the Tampa Bay Watch Auer Marine Education Center and at other activity locations, including the 32’ USCG Inspected Classroom Vessel and kayaks
- Prepare, teach, and implement camp plans and activities in an efficient manner
- Regularly perform routine camp duties; such as setting up activity materials and equipment, breakdown, clean-up, etc.
- Understand TBW mission and our policies and procedures
- Adhere to TBW standards related to uniform, conduct, cleanliness, safety, and timeliness at all times
- Assist the “EE” team performing inventory and routine maintenance on summer camp supplies and equipment
- Monitor and appropriately correct campers’ behavior with support from the “EE” team
- Maintain familiarity with camp rosters and campers’ individual needs
- Handle live animal ambassadors in a classroom setting
- Assist the department with other duties as assigned
Education, Knowledge, and Skills Required:
- Bachelor’s degree or degree in progress with relevant work experience
- Must have prior experience working with children
- Ability to work M-F 8:30-4:30
- Experience with informal and/or formal education, and environmental and marine sciences
- Animal handling experience preferred, but not required
- Public speaking and audience management skills
- Proficient with PC and Microsoft software and basic scientific tools and methods
- The ability to work both indoors and outdoors in Florida’s environment, lift up to 50 lbs., and interact and engage on a high-energy level daily
Required Certifications/Courses or other Tampa Bay Watch Requirements:
- First aid and CPR/AED certifications (Potential for employer to provide)
- USCG Consortium drug testing program for boating (Employer provided)
- Level II Background Screening (Employer provided)
- Proof of health insurance
- Previous experience with lifeguarding or current certification is beneficial
